Hurricane Gloria is soon to brush our shores with torrential rains and anxiety.
Currently the eye of Hurricane Gloria is about 160 kilometers away from the Virgin island of Anguila. It is currently a category one hurricane, but may pick up speed and strength by the time it reaches Atlantic City.
Hurricanes form over a warm stretch of open sea. The warmth and humidity causes clouds to form and a low-pressure area gets the storm spinning. The center becomes the relatively calm eye. The tropical storm becomes a hurricane when the winds
are going 70 miles per hour. Humid air rising and the moisture condensing fuels the hurricane’s movement.

A hurricane moving over the ocean picks up moisture and energy. In the event it hits land the hurricane starts to dump out the moisture it’s picked up, causing dangerous floods, winds and storm surge.
Atlantic City is brushed or hit approximately every 5.78 years by hurricanes. About every 33.25 years our city gets a direct hurricane hit. Be sure to monitor the weather while its hurricane season, obey weather officials, and have a plan for when the hurricane is approaching. Stay informed!
